From the Nouvelle Athènes up to Montmartre
The walk begins in the Nouvelle Athènes, the quarter of new streets below Montmartre where painters, actors and musicians settled in the 1820s and 1830s. Gustave Moreau’s house is crammed to the ceiling with his own work; a few streets away, at the end of a lane off the rue Chaptal, Ary Scheffer’s house and garden recall the Friday evenings where Delacroix, Sand and Chopin met. Then the walk climbs the Butte, and it is a real climb, to the old village on the hill: the Musée de Montmartre, where Renoir painted in the garden and Valadon and Utrillo lived, and, just below it, the vineyard planted by local residents in 1933.
